WEEK 70: 28 May: Examples and Citation with Elliott

Admin

Plan your work and work your plan in the final month before your video submission for the IRL exhibition. Please look here for examples of the showcase/showreel from 2024

You should also anticipate writing a short (100 words) and preparing a thumbnail image.

Tasks

For your IRL showcase submission: You should anticipate writing a short (100 words) and preparing a thumbnail image. Here are some examples of biogs to get you going. Please also see the examples of your peers from 2024, in the folder above.

If you have begun writing parts of your unit 7 submission, please bring a text sample of it to class. And spend a few minutes consider your positionality and how this informs your writing and investigation.

Academic Support Workshop 28th May 2025

12:00 – 13:00: with Kristina Kapilin. This workshop will focus on strategies for synthesising research and how this can support you in building an argument and gain new insights.

As for previous workshops with Bethany, it will be on the Academic Support Teams channel.

LIVE SESSION

13:00 – 15:00: You’ll be with Elliott, looking at Harvard style academic citation conventions; the use of AI (large-language-models) in academic work; and exploring issues of voice and positionality. Please also anticipate the online version of the C School Showcase. (You’ll recall we began speaking about that in our Pecha Kucha session.)

We will be looking at the different between writing framed with objective neutrality (“it can be reasoned that…”), personal opinion (“it is my conclusion that…” / “I am led to believe…”) and a collective style (“we can understand…”). And how choosing from one of these options shapes how our text communicates with our reader in different ways.

WEEK 68: 14 May: REBEL Pecha Kucha with Elliott and Marsha

notes ;

Self-awareness: The ability to reflect on one’s own role in the local community and (global) society; to continually evaluate and further motivate one’s actions; and to deal with one’s feelings and desires.

Normative: The ability to understand and reflect on the norms and values that underlie one’s actions; and to negotiate sustainability values, principles, goals, and targets, in a context of conflicts of interests and trade-offs, uncertain knowledge and contradictions.

If it’s coming from your positionality, you’ll need to make this explicit.

Please keep top of my sustainability in terms of knowledge transmission through archiving – and accessing.

If it’s coming from your positionality, you’ll need to make this explicit.

I would suggest moving from general statements about what art does, to specifically locate these actions / functions in a Cypriot context. Specificity adds nuance to what can end up as being rather universal statements.

Think carefully about intangible cultural heritage and tangible cultural heritage.

It’s really helpful to use concrete examples…

There’s also a point to make about how cultural expressions are inscribed (fixed) but then the interpretation of the fixed is dynamic… an ongoing process of meaning making.

MY NOTES :

HOW= ENGAGEMENT

FOCUS ON CYPRIOT CONTXT, (START WITH BROAD DESCRIPTIONS AND THEN NARROW DOWN FOCUS)

COMBINATION W INTANGIBLE… WHAT IS THE CONNECTION

what does it mean to fix and freeze a LIVE, CHANGING oral story for example into an image for ever

full first draft in june- ideal

MAKE THE ARGUMENT IN A WAY THAT IS SUFFICIENTLY LAYED OUT AND COMMUNICATED- ACTIVATE IMAGES!! DONT JUST USE THEM ( ANIMATE PARTS)- if u go the video essay route.
